World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.
Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This is the sum of all its upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). On PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.
There are a few theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values and gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface wouldn't show all possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of item discoveries and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails.
The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item with Luck increases this chance by five percent.
The upgrade overlays of the item are displayed above items in the inventory. This could block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
